The open-end wrenches name is derived from the openings at each end of the wrench. Open-end wrenches are sized by the distance across the opening of the flats of the wrench types and has two different sizes on each wrench tool. Open-end wrenches are available in both fractional and metric sizes.

Here you can see one wrench is a fractional size expressed in fractions of an inch, and one end is metric sized expressed in millimeters. Open wrenches have a 15 degree offset on each opening. This allows better alignment access when working in tight areas.

What is the difference between a Box Wrench Set vs Open End Wrench Set?

If the wrench cannot be aligned or turned completely turn the wrench over and retry. The open end wrench can be fitted to a fastener very quickly but has the disadvantage of easily slipping off when force is applied because the fastener is gripped by only two flats of the hex head.

The box-end wrench also has two different opening sizes but has the advantage of gripping the fastener head much more securely than the open end.

Use Pliers

groove joint

Here’s the tool I use most often they call groove joint or water pump pliers. They adjust to several different sizes.

To tighten up hold the pliers like this as per picture.

Best Tips for Open End Wrench and Combine Wrenches

To loosen it turn the pliers over like this as per picture.

Open End Wrench

When you hold the pliers backwards as you apply force the jaws will start to open up and lose their grip. If you keep pushing you can strip the head of the nut. In the correct position, the jaws will hold tight making it much easier to turn the nut.

Pliers and Wrenches

But with pliers you still need to use some of your strength to grip the work. A wrench can make it a lot easier. These are combination wrenches. They are open at one end and closed at the other and they come in a variety of fixed dimensions from small up to large.

adjustable open end wrench

But most times I like to use this it’s an adjustable open end wrench or adjustable spanner wrench. Once the wrench is adjusted all your force can be used to spin the nut and this little chance of stripping it or rounding it over.

hexagonal nut

A wrench like this works if you have a hexagonal nut you can grab onto.

round pipe stilson

If you have a round pipe you’ll need a pipe wrench also known as a stilson.

iron pipe

As I push down on the handle, the jaw gets tighter and tighter making a good grip on the round surface like this iron pipe.

three corner bike pliers backwards

But here is important tip, make sure you adjust the wrench so it touches the pipe in three places around the pipe.

It’s called a three corner bike. If the wrench only touches in two places and you apply a lot of force as a chance you can take this round pipe and turn it into an oval, making it nearly impossible to thread it in or out. So now if you ever need one of these you’ll know where to turn.
